Lactoferrin - What is it?

Lactoferrin is a single-chain glycoprotein, a bioactive peptide which has many important functions in the human body.

A number of studies have been undertaken into Lactoferrin and other similar peptides which have shown its ability to suppress tumour growth and inhibit tumour formation particularly in bowel related cancers. It has also been shown to reduce inflammation in the gut.

Lactoferrin has known antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties however this is not the main reason for its beneficial effects.

One of the most important functions of Lactoferrin is to transport iron around the body. Lactoferrin binds easily with iron, its powerful ability to transport iron increases bio-availability of this essential nutrient and increases uptake. Lactoferrin can be extremely useful for people with iron deficiency or anemia.

As Lactoferrin binds easily with iron it starves harmful pathogenic bacteria from this essential mineral. This benefits intestinal health by promoting the correct balance of beneficial bacteria. Lactoferrin may also inhibit the attachment of bacteria to the intestinal wall. As Lactoferrin also has anti-fungal properties it can be used to combat candida.

Lactoferrin is present in many bodily fluids such as tears, saliva and breast milk. It is found in strongest concentrations in human colostrum (first milk) and is particularly important as it may be the only source of iron for new born infants. It is believed to be responsible for passing immunity from mother to baby. Lactoferrin is also present in bovine milk however human milk contains up to fifteen times more Lactoferrin and is the second most abundant protein found in human milk.

Although Lactoferrin is abundant in milk protein it is mainly excreted by surface epithelia in the nasal, tracheal, and gastrointestinal tract. These secretions include a broad spectrum of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory peptides which protect against chemical and microbial challenges. Lactoferrin is also produced in neutrophils where it is stored and released during inflammation.
