What exactly is EMF?
EMF = Electromagnetic Field. It can also be known as Electromagnetic Radiation.
Mobile phones and mobile phone masts use electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range.
The World Health Organisation has classified microwave radiation as a Class 2B carcinogen.
The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) scale states:
‘The agent is possibly carcinogenic to humans.’
Bare facts such as these are enough to make anyone sit up and think....
We live today in an electromagnetic smog produced by the millions of electronic devices in use all around us. Chief among these smog producers are mobile phones and their masts. The masts in particular continuously bathe the world with pulses of microwave radiation. These pulsing microwaves constantly bombard the body, interfering with our own electrical systems and possibly damaging the immune system. There have been many instances of ill-health clustered around mobile phone mast sites, ranging from minor ailments such as headaches and nausea to life threatening diseases such as leukaemia and certain forms of cancer. All of which may not worry you so much, but what about the effect it might be having on the developing bodies and brains of our children? |

In 2000, Sir William Stewart (now chairman of the Health Protection Agency), headed up a government enquiry into phone masts. He felt the scientific research was sufficient enough to apply a precautionary approach when it came to siting phone masts near schools.
Evidence enough you might have thought of the risks posed by microwave radiation but the funny thing is, in the same year, the government sold off the licences for the next generation of mobile phones (3G) for £22.5 billion…..
Other Main Sources of EMF.
Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi = Wireless Fidelity and it enables connection to the internet through the transmission of radio waves between a router, which is connected to a telephone line, and a small transmitter in a computer.
Radio waves are a form of radiation, like microwaves, and just like the use of mobile phones should be restricted for children, so should the use of wi-fi.
An investigation into the wi-fi networks at some schools showed that radiation levels were up to 3 times that found in the main beam of radiation intensity from a mobile phone mast.
The same applies in the home. Children should avoid using a wireless laptop in their lap because they will only be about 2cm from the computers transmitter and will receive exposure to radiation comparable to that of a mobile phone.
Tetra Masts
TETRA = Terrestrial Trunked Radio and is a fairly new mobile communication network specifically designed for the emergency services, government agencies, public safety networks and the military. Tetra is different from other mobile networks in that it allows users to have many channels open at once, essential when co-ordinating a response to crimes, attacks or disasters. |

The problem with this multi-channel system is that it uses extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation which is regarded as presenting more of a risk to the population because there is no gap in the pulses of microwave radiation. Instead it’s a steady rhythm, 17.64 times a second, with no let up.
Because tetra masts are thought of as essential, they can be erected anywhere. Close to schools, on top of hospitals, near nursing homes and just metres away from houses. They are often added to existing masts, requiring no planning permission……
Sleeping with the lights on?
You might not think so but visible light is just a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes infra-red, ultra-violet, X-rays, radio waves and microwaves. So even though it might be dark in your room, you could still be bathed in invisible light all night long. This could be detrimental to your health because it may disrupt the production of melatonin, which increases during the hours of darkness. Melatonin is very important to the body for many reasons such as regulating hormones and keeping the body clock ticking over. In addition, it has been found that low levels of melatonin can help certain cancers develop and high levels can strengthen the effect of chemotherapy drugs.
So what can be done?
In short, not much. Mobile phones are like cars. They are so essential to everyday life that we just have to put up with the casualties.
But, you can stop you and your family from joining that growing list.
