What are Probiotics and Prebiotics?
Probiotics are simply friendly bacteria. They are the living beneficial bacteria and other micro-organisms which naturally populate the gut.
'Good bacteria' in the gut promote healthy digestion, aid in the release of energy and boost immunity. They also balance the amount of yeast and fungus we have in our bodies and keep any harmful pathogenic bacteria in check. Our intestinal micro-flora is extremely important. An imbalance of good bacteria may cause 'bad bacteria' and/or yeast overgrowth. This condition is called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis can occur because of bad diet, stress or a compromised immune system. However the main cause is usually drugs. Steroids can be extremely disruptive, but it is antibiotics that cause the main problem. We all know how effective antibiotics are at killing bad bacteria in the body. Unfortunately antibiotics cannot differentiate between good and bad strains and will kill both. After finishing a course of antibiotics, supplementing with a good probiotic is advised.
There are many different strains of good bacteria. A common strain is lactobacillus. You should be looking to take a probiotic which has multiple strains of good bacteria with as high a potency as possible. Each capsule should usually contain more than a billion viable organisms. Probiotics are alive, made up from living cultures, and many probiotics will require refrigeration in order to protect the living cultures from perishing. However, not all will and some can survive months at room temperatures. Always check your product for the best storage methods.
Prebiotics feed the micro-flora. Prebiotics are non-digestible foods which pass through our digestive system without being destroyed to feed and stimulate growth of our micro-flora. Like probiotics, prebiotics can be found in foods and good nutrition is important to support our friendly bacteria however, in some cases, supplementation may be required in order to help give your micro-flora the extra boost it needs in order to colonize and settle in the gut.
