Graviola
Graviola, also known as sour sop, is grown in the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. The graviola tree grows to about 5 metres tall and has adapted to areas of the world with high humidity and relatively warm winters, as it is an evergreen. Temperatures below 5°c will damage the plant; below 3°c will kill it.
The claim to fame of Graviola is its cytotoxic properties, which means its ability to kill cancer cells. More than 34 cytotoxic compounds have been isolated from Graviola, some of them being up to 100 million times more potent than commonly used cytotoxic chemotherapy compounds (reference; http://www.equilibra.uk.com/graviola.htm)
Graviola’s active ingredient is called annonaceous acetogenin. People in African and South American countries have used graviola to treat viral infections, parasites, rheumatism, arthritis, depression, and nausea.
Graviola leaves can be used to combat high blood pressure resulting in a calming effect on the whole body
Graviola can improve your mood as it contains a serotonin uptake inhibitor. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in the experience of joy. When serotonin is released at the synaptic level, stimulating post-synaptic neurons, the effect of serotonin is blocked by recapturing serotonin within the pre-synaptic terminal. This process is called ‘re-uptake’. A way of enhancing the "joy system" in the brain and alleviating mood swings is to increase the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft by blocking the reuptake of serotonin.
Compounds that block this process are called "serotonin reuptake inhibitors;' commonly referred to as SRI. Several common medications are SRIs. Another way to increase the "serotonin joy system" is to consume compounds that mimic serotonin, acting in the brain like serotonin. An extract from Graviola was shown to contain three compounds that act like serotonin in the brain.
