Cayenne - What is it?

Cayenne pepper has been traditionally used for thousands of years both in cooking and medicine. It is made from the dried pods of chilli peppers and it is well known for its spicy taste and smell. Its strong heat comes from the chemical capsicum which is also the active ingredient within its medicinal properties.
Cayenne Pepper originates from the America’s were it is particularly popular in cuisine. The plant was first cultivated in Peru as far back as four thousand years ago. The Hot and Bell chillis used to make Cayenne Pepper were first brought back to Europe by the explorer Diego Alvarez Chanca in the fifteenth century. It quickly spread across Europe into Asia where it also became popular in cooking and medicine.

The wide range of medicinal properties of Cayenne are well known worldwide. It is known to work as a catalyst when used with other herbs stimulating absorption and thus making them more effective. Apart from this desirable property Cayenne Pepper has many other beneficial effects.

Capsicum (cayenne pepper) is said to be unequal for its ability to boost circulation and increase heart action. Capsicum exerts a variety of desirable actions on the entire cardiovascular system.
