Melatonin - What is it?

Melatonin or 5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamineis a naturally occurring compound found in most living things. In humans it is produced in the pineal gland at the base of the brain. Melatonin is a hormone made from the amino acid tryptophan. Its production is stimulated by darkness. When our surrounding are dark a signal is sent to the pineal gland to secrete melatonin and this is thought to trigger sleep. Light causes the production of melatonin to be suppressed. Melatonin regulates sleep cycles, and may even play a role in the circadian rhythm, our body clock. Melatonin also has potent antioxidant properties which protect and repair damage caused by free radicals.

Uses of Melatonin

Melatonin is used by many people suffering with sleep complaints. It is paticuarly useful for people suffering from jet-lag/insomnia as it helps restore your natural body clock. It has also been shown that melatonin helps protect against ultraviolet light and sunburn.

Melatonin and Cancer In recent history there have been numerous studies undertaken into the connection between Melatonin and the spread of certain types of cancer. In animal studies Melatonin has been shown to slow the spread of some forms of cancer compared to other tumours that have not been treated. Similar results have been observed in humans. Although Melatonin appears to slow the progression of cancerous tumours much more research is required to prove any conclusive evidence that Melatonin is effective against cancer.
